Jeremy Affeldt offered some unusual advice to the dozen or so high school athletes attending the Fresno Grizzlies’ Hot Stove Gala on Tuesday night: “If your only dream is to play sports at the professional or college level,” the San Francisco Giants left-hander said, “your life will be miserable.” But he wasn’t trying to scare the athletes or anyone else among the crowd of 350 at the Grizzlies’ annual season-launching event at Pardini’s restaurant in northwest Fresno. “Use the sport as an advantage to do good things for other people,” he said. Gavin & Leanna Floyd help Chicago’s food bank depository

Gavin and Leanna have been volunteers at the Greater Chicago Food Depository for several years. Chicago’s food bank, is a nonprofit food distribution and training center providing food for hungry people while striving to end hunger in our community. The Food Depository distributes donated and purchased food through a network of 650 pantries, soup kitchens and shelters to 678,000 adults and children in Cook County every year. Last year, the Food Depository distributed 64 million pounds of nonperishable food and fresh produce, dairy products and meat, the equivalent of 134,800 meals every day.

Students at Oakland Christian School enjoyed a special visit from quarterback Jon Kitna of the Detroit Lions. Terry Foster writes, “Kitna gives dozens of speeches each year. He is always engaging and pleasant. He always presents himself well. However, he becomes a different man when he turns from Lions quarterback to missionary.” “The students got to hear a powerful message from a hero and Kitna got to meet like-minded people.” Kitna took part in the Take a Player to School program, which is sponsored by JC Penney, After school Alliance and the NFL.
